Visiting
Abenaki

Coming from another mountain for a race or a day on the hill? Here’s how our little hill works.

The trail map

Illustrated trail map of Abenaki Ski Area. From left to right: Twister, most difficult; Main Hill, easiest, with the rope tow running up its right edge to the summit; Kiddie Hill, easiest, with its own small tow; Freeway, more difficult; and Peter's Pride and Headwall, most difficult, curving down the right side. At the base sit the race shed, the lodge, a turnaround and parking lot, and the Pop Whalen Ice & Arts Center, with cross-country trails leading off to either side.

Most of our races run on Twister. Open the full-size map

Riding the rope tow

  1. Wear tow gloves

The rope chews right through good gloves, so leave the new pair in the car. Leather gloves or mittens, the Kinco sort, are the ones that last. Grab a pair at Abenaki or at Bradley’s Hardware in Wolfeboro.

  2. Grab on and ride

Point your skis or board straight up the track. Close your hands gently around the rope, let it slide for a moment, then hold on and let it pull you up.

  3. Let go at the top

Let go and slide out of the way for the next rider. If you fall on the way up, let go and roll clear of the track.

Directions (opens in a new tab)

Parking

Parking is on the town side of the hill, in the Pine Hill Road lot. It fills by 8:30 on a race morning; carpool if you can.

The lodge

The lodge is open all day for warming up, restrooms and the snack bar. Racers stage inside, so keep the doorways clear.

The Town of Wolfeboro runs the hill and sets its hours, with night skiing three nights a week. Lift tickets and hours are on the Town’s page.

Racing at Abenaki

See the races at Abenaki

Families register their own racer. Coaches do not enter anyone. Each race takes entries through its own registration link, on the race schedule.

Stand along the fence on the lodge side of the finish. You will see the last four or five gates and the finish from there.

Stay off the course and out of the rope tow line while racers are running. A course worker will wave you across between runs.

Races are seldom canceled for weather. Dress for cold, wind and sleet, and bring something to stand on.
